Liverpool’s midfielders have been criticised by Anfield great Graeme Souness over their dreadful goal output.With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still recovering from the serious injury he suffered last year, Jurgen Klopp has rotated James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita in the middle of the park.2

The majority of that group are defensive-minded players – aside from Keita, who proved himself a fine attacker during his time with RB Leipzig – and Klopp clearly sacrifices attacking threat from deep in favour of a more solid midfield.So far, this lack of goal threat has not affected Liverpool as they remain in the title race, though their recent results – the 5-0 thrashing of Watford aside – raised doubts about where goals will come from if the Reds’ front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are not firing as they usually do.And Souness, writing in his Sunday Times column, believes the aforementioned quintet must do much more in the final third.“Modern midfielders get away with murder,” Souness writes. “They say they ‘recycle’ possession, whatever that means, but youre either a defensive or an attacking midfielder. “If youre the latter, assists are OK, but do you score goals?“Liverpools five midfielders have six league goals between them.“They get away with it because of the front three they have, but its not enough from James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita.”Oxlade-Chamberlain scored five goals last season before suffering knee ligament damage in April, proving himself as the most effective attacking player Klopp can name in his central trio.2
